How are central issues in Hegel’s philosophy, such as freedom, personhood and the dialectic of lordship and bondage are deeply entangled with his disturbing views on colonialism, slavery, and race?
In surprisingly detailed discussions scattered throughout much of his late work, German Idealist philosopher G.W.F. Hegel offers assessments that legitimise colonialism in the Americas, the enslavement of Africans, and British rule in India. This conversation between leading Hegel scholars will explore how central issues in his philosophy, such as freedom, personhood and the dialectic of lordship and bondage are deeply entangled with his disturbing views on colonialism, slavery, and race. These systematic entanglements raise pressing questions: how are other, seemingly more emancipatory parts of Hegel’s philosophical system affected by his views on race, colonialism and transatlantic slavery, and to what extent can post- and neo-Hegelian critical theory disentangle Hegelian insights from these connections, or revise them in ways that can “save Hegel from himself”.
Daniel James teaches philosophy at the Humboldt-University of Berlin. Franz Knappik is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bergen. Together, they are co-conveners of the workshop series Hegel (anti)kolonial, co-authors of a forthcoming book on Hegel and Colonialism with Cambridge University Press and co-editors of the themed special issue of the Hegel Bulletin on Racism and Colonialism in Hegel’s Philosophy, all with Franz Knappik.
Franz Knappik is professor of philosophy at the University of Bergen. His historical research focuses on Classical German Philosophy and he has published on topics that include: Kant’s moral psychology; Hegel’s metaphysics, philosophy of mind, moral philosophy, political philosophy, and his views on race and colonialism; and Fichte’s epistemology.
Jamila M. H. Mascat is an Assistant Professor of Gender and Postcolonial Studies at Utrecht University. Her transdisciplinary research works across the fields of Political Philosophy (German Idealism and Marxism in particular), Postcolonial Studies, Feminist Theories, and Critical Race Theories. Her current research interests focus, on the one hand, on theories of partisanship and political engagement and, on the other hand, on theories of postcolonial justice and postcolonial reparations.
