USAID-supported integrated nutrition, Suaahara program promotes exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and introduction of diversified food after six months while continuing breast milk. Complementary feeding is the process where infants are given additional nutritious food along with breast milk after they reach six months until two years of age. It is a transition from exclusive breastfeeding to family foods. It should be given in right amount and also the frequency and consistency of the food should be taken care of. The complementary foods can be prepared with locally and easily available ingredients. The proper complementary feeding not only depends on the availability of a variety of foods in the household, but also on the feeding practices. Feeding young infants requires active care and stimulation, where the feeder is responsive to the child clues for hunger and also needs to encourage the child to eat – this is called which is referred as responsive complementary feeding.
This video shows the responsive feeding process including the quality and quantity of foods for children from 6 months to 2 years old.
