This episode brings the series back with the Dance of the Dragons fully underway. The premiere opens with Rhaena finally approaching and bonding with the wild dragon Sheepstealer, giving Team Black another dragonrider, but also introducing a dangerous new force that she cannot fully control.

In King’s Landing, Aemond Targaryen realizes that Aegon has fled with Larys Strong, leaving the Greens in a dangerous political position. Alicent tries to manipulate Aemond into leaving the city for Harrenhal, hoping to create an opening for Rhaenyra to take King’s Landing without more bloodshed, but Aemond’s fear, pride, and hunger for power make the situation even more unstable.

On Dragonstone, Rhaenyra believes she has a chance to take the throne, but Jacaerys does not trust Alicent’s plan. When the Battle of the Gullet begins, Jace takes action and has Rhaenyra locked away to stop her from flying into danger. This choice turns the premiere into a painful moment between mother and son, right before the war delivers one of its biggest losses.

The Battle of the Gullet brings Corlys Velaryon, Alyn, Baela, Jace, Vermax, Moondancer, Rhaena, Sheepstealer, and the Triarchy into a brutal naval conflict. Dragons attack from the sky, ships are destroyed, harpoons bring down Vermax, and Jace is killed after being thrown into the water and struck by arrows.

By the end of the episode, Team Black has survived the battle but at a terrible cost. Rhaenyra loses another son, another dragon, and her heir, pushing the war into an even more tragic and personal place as Season 3 begins.
