Reality TV is all about the drama, and TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé is no exception. The series, which follows international couples in the three months leading up to their weddings, captures moments of tension: fights about paperwork, arguments over culture and even heated threats of deportation. While most of these marriages fall under the category of “rushed” or “too immature,” the same cannot be said for Colt Johnson and his now ex-girlfriend Jess Caroline. Their relationship can only be described in two words: emotionally abusive.

What Is Love?
Over the course of the season, Colt has become one of the most extreme faces on the show. The Vegas-based computer programmer cheated on his Brazilian girlfriend by sending nude photographs of himself to other women. He allowed an ex hook-up to move in with him while he and Jess were still together. And that’s not even the worst of it.

In a joined Instagram live, Jess and another one of Colt’s exes- Larissa Lima dos Santos -alleged that they were victims of revenge porn. According to their joined statement to the public, Colt intentionally leaked their nude photos to his followers on social media.

Even after Colt was caught red-handed in his own web of lies, he still thinks that everything was Jess’s fault. In the preview to the reunion episode, Colt blames Jess for the way the couple ended. “You didn’t love me and that’s fine, but don’t act like you were the best girlfriend,” Colt told Jess in the preview.

Gaslight City
While Colt’s behavior was wildly unacceptable, he still spent the reunion attacking Jess, instead of owning up to his own actions. “You wanted to change me. You wanted to change the way I lived, the way I looked, everything about me,” Colt accused his ex.

According to Psychology Today, the term “gaslighting” refers to a manipulation tactic in which an abuser attacks their victim in order to blame the victim for the abuse at hand.

In Colt’s mind, all of the cheating and revenge porn was Jess’s fault, because she was not a perfect partner throughout their relationship. Unfortunately for Colt, that’s not how things work. Emotional abuse is emotional abuse, and it is never the victim’s fault.

After everything that Colt did to Jess, however, it is not surprising that he would add gaslighting to his list of offenses.
