Research tells us that it is common for women to experience shoulder movement changes and weakness in the first 2 years after their breast cancer surgery. But many women do not get their shoulders fully assessed by trained therapists. This video shows examples of small changes in the shoulder that can be responsible for shoulder weakness.
I explain what to look for, so you can check out your arm and armpit in the mirror. If you decide that you need to have your shoulder and scars assessed - then ask at your cancer care clinic, look at the oncology service provider listing below, or have an online assessment with me.
This stretch is not for the first 2 weeks after surgery- your wounds need to be healed first.
The assessment relies on specific arm stretches but the treatments use a range of other approaches:
Lewit Barrier release (a specific massage method for scars and stiffness), Cupping for radiotherapy tightness and problematic scars,
Trigger point release,
Retraining shoulder and trunk core stability.
Find a therapist trained in oncology and scars at www.foundation96.com or
connect and arrange an online consult with me. Click on the link at the video (I)
