More than a million volts carrying the equivalent of 12 large power stations worth of power down a single line? Such a feat should be unthinkable. But it's here right now. Today. And since it's installation 3 years ago, it has delivered more than 300 BILLION kilowatt hours of electricity from wind and solar farms in the North West of China to the industrial centres 3000km away in the East. Now China is building another 2700km UHVDC line from the Tibetan plateau to the Guangdong - Hong Kong -Macau region. And it's planning another 10 lines by 2050. So can the West ever hope to compete with such ambition?
