There exist over 50 species of marigolds and some of the popular ones include Mexican marigolds, French marigolds, and signet marigolds. Marigold flowers hold a special cultural significance in India since they form a staple in the ‘puja’ rituals of many temples as well as in garlands for any auspicious occasion or festive celebration. Tagetes is a genus of annual or perennial, mostly herbaceous plants in the #sunflower family. It was described as a genus by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The plants are native to the Americas, growing naturally from the southwestern United States into South America, but some species have become naturalized around the world.
শীতের অন্যতম জনপ্রিয় ফুল হল গাঁদা। শীতকালেই গাঁদা ফুলটি দেখতেও দারুণ এবং বেশি দেখা যায়। অনেকে ‘গেন্দা’ ফুলও বলে থাকে। এর ইংরেজি নাম ‘মেরিগোল্ড’। গাঁদা ফুলের বিভিন্ন প্রজাতি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের অ্যারিজোনা রাজ্য এবং আমেরিকার মেক্সিকো, আর্জেন্টিনায় উৎপত্তি হয়েছে। আমাদের দেশে শহর-বন্দর ও গ্রামাঞ্চলে অতি প্রাচীন থেকেই এ ফুল ছড়িয়ে আছে। গাঁদার এত জনপ্রিয়তা কেন- তা বিশ্লেষণ করে জানা যায়, এ ফুলের চাষপদ্ধতি অপেক্ষাকৃত সহজ, খরচের তুলনায় অধিক লাভজনক, দীর্ঘকালীন সজীবতা, বাগানের শোভাবর্ধন, রং, বর্ণবৈচিত্র্য ও কোমলতা সর্বশ্রেণির মানুষের কাছে মনোমুগ্ধকর ও তৃপ্তিকর। তাছাড়া এ ফুল শুধু বাগানের সৌন্দর্যবর্ধনেই শীর্ষস্থানীয় নয় বরং উৎসব অনুষ্ঠানে, গৃহসজ্জায়, শ্রদ্ধা জানাতে, হিন্দুদের পূজাপার্বণে, বিভিন্ন জাতীয় দিবসে ফুলের তোড়া ও মালা বানাতে ব্যবহার হয়ে আসছে বলেই গাঁদার জনপ্রিয়তা এত সর্বজনবিদিত। গাঁদা ফুলের প্রজাতি রয়েছে প্রায় ২০টি। কিন্তু সব প্রজাতি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নয়। উদ্যানে ব্যবহার, জনপ্রিয়তা, চাষ ও চাহিদা অনুযায়ী আমাদের দেশে দু’প্রজাতির গাঁদা চাষাবাদ হয়ে থাকে। যেমন একটি হল- আফ্রিকান গাঁদা এবং অপরটি ফরাসি গাঁদা। আফ্রিকান তিউনিশিয়া থেকে এ প্রজাতির গাঁদা ইউরোপে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে বিধায় একে আফ্রিকান গাঁদা বলে অভিহিত করে। এ প্রজাতির ফুলগুলো বেশ বড় হয় এবং গাছ অত্যন্ত আকর্ষণীয়। এ প্রজাতির গাঁদা হলুদ, বাসন্তী, কমলা, সোনালি, সাদা বর্ণের এক রঙা ফুল হয়ে থাকে।
