معلمة (Lady-Boss): From Hypersexualization to Empowerment in Bellydance
My mother used to do belly dancing as a hobby many years ago. I was still a pre-teen during that time and, every now and again, my mom used to take me and my younger sister with her. It was such a fun and safe memory that I always cherished.
The idea to explore the world of belly dancing came back to me due to the rising discourse surrounding female empowerment and gender equality. By having seen the joy and confidence that this dance form brought to many, I wanted to highlight how belly dance can translate into a form of empowerment and womanhood - the beauty and magic of it - through this documentary.
Moreover, I think that society has not always placed these women in a fair and respected place. That’s why I wanted to delve deeper into the stigma and double standard of belly dancing as also experienced in Middle Eastern and Western cultures. However, in the end, this historical dance should be celebrated in its full form. Hopefully, it will inspire viewers one way or another to ignite their sensuality and find strength and confidence through their feminine side of themselves.
