This is a 19th century Appalachian murder ballad. It shares some similarities with Pretty Polly and The Knoxville Girl. I've adapted a version of this ballad with 21st century lyrics that I'll share in a couple weeks.
I asked my love to take a walk
just a little ways with me
and as we walked we would talk
all about our wedding day
darling say that you'll be mine
in no others arms entwined
down beside where the waters flow
on the banks of the Ohio
I held my knife against her breast
as into my arms she pressed
she cried Willie don't you murder me
I'm unprepared for eternity
I took her by her pretty little hand
dragged her down that bank of sand
there I threw her into drown
watched her as she floated down
returning home tween twelve and one
thinking Lord what deed I've done
I killed the girl I love you see
all because she would not marry me
the very next day at half past four
the sheriff walked right through my door
he said young man you got to go
down the banks of the Ohio
