(21 Oct 2019) American strike weapons, previously prohibited by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, are highly likely to be deployed in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe to provoke tension, Russia's Defence Minister said on Monday.
"Such a decision will inevitably lead to an arms race, the growth of conflict potential, and increase the likelihood of incidents," Sergei Shoigu told a plenary session of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum on security.
Shoigu underlined that countries that agree to deploy intermediate-range weapons on their territory "will essentially become hostages to American politics."
The INF Treaty was terminated on August 2 after the US announced its withdrawal.
At the same forum, a senior North Korean military official said the US and South Korea must suspend hostile approaches in exchange for peace on the Korean Peninsular.
Kim Hyong Ryong, North Korea's Vice Minister of the People's Armed Forces, said the US and its ally have been pursuing malicious intentions for gaining military supremacy over North Korea.
"Comprehensive and permanent termination of all kinds of military hostilities which have caused confrontation, conflicts, prolonged escalation of tension and deepened distrust and antagonism is the priority condition and central premise of ensuring the peace on the Korean Peninsular," Kim said.
During his speech at the forum, Vietnamese Defence Minister, General Ngo Xuan Lich, said disputes between his nation and China over the South China Sea, or East Sea as the Vietnamese name it, should be resolved through peaceful means without the use or threat of force
The two countries are in months-long stand-off after Beijing dispatched a research ship to conduct an energy survey in waters controlled by Vietnam in July.
Mainland China claims almost all the energy-rich waters but neighbours Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims.
With the theme of "maintaining international order and promoting peace in the Asia-Pacific," the two-day Xiangshan Forum will discuss topics including great power relations, regional and maritime security and international order.
