Carlo Falciani completed his doctorate in Florence under Carlo Del Bravo in 1995 with a thesis on Rosso Fiorentino, he studied Rosso Fiorentino's activity in France at the Université Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne, and he was a fellow at both Villa i Tatti, Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts of National Gallery in Washington. He teaches Storia dell’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze.

His extensive curatorial activity includes two exhibitions for the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris: Florence, portraits à la cour de Mèdicis, (2015-2016), and La collection Alana. Chefs-d'œuvre de la peinture italienne. Together with Antonio Natali he curated three major exhibitions at Florence's Palazzo Strozzi: Bronzino, pittore e poeta alla corte dei Medici (2010-2011); Pontormo e Rosso, divergenti vie della maniera (2014); and Il Cinquecento a Firenze (2017-2018). As guest curator, he collaborated with Keith Christiansen on The Medici.
