Thyroid Storm vs. Myxedema Coma | Endocrine System (Part 6)

Описание: For this 6th and final lesson, we take a look at Thyroid Storm vs. Myxedema Coma. Both disorders dealing with inappropriate levels of thyroid hormone but on completely opposite spectrums. To start, we do a quick review of the thyroid hormone; where it comes from and what it does.

From there we move on to talk about Thyrotoxic crisis, commonly referred to as Thyroid storm. We talk about this being a crisis of having too much thyroid hormone and how it is important as it can lead to death, as well as some of its causes and talk about the theories behind its patho. From there we talk about the signs and symptoms, how it is diagnosed and then ultimately the treatment that we can provide for our patients in this crisis.

Next we move on to talk about Myxedema Coma, which is on the other end of the spectrum from thyroid storm, as we now have a disorder of have too little thyroid hormone. We really stress that this is a grave condition and absolutely life threatening. We cover some of the causes of the precipitating stress event and what that means to our patients. We also cover the signs and symptoms, talk a little about diagnosing these patients, and most importantly the treatment that we would provide for them.

Hopefully with this lesson you will have a better understanding of these two thyroid hormone disorders. They are quite different from each other and have very different treatment modalities, but ultimately they both are dealing with an issue with thyroid hormone.
