This discussion explores the moral and religious teachings about warfare, focusing specifically on the treatment of women and children during war. Throughout human history, warfare has been a painful reality, and different religions and civilizations have presented their own rules and principles regarding conduct in battle.
Islamic teachings emphasize strict ethical limits in warfare. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) clearly prohibited the killing of women, children, the elderly, and other non-combatants. Various hadith narrations highlight the importance of maintaining justice, mercy, and humanity even in the battlefield.
In contrast, certain passages in the Bible describe commands given during specific wars in which entire populations—including women and children—were ordered to be destroyed. These texts raise important ethical and theological questions that are often discussed in interfaith and historical studies.
In this talk, we first examine the Islamic principles of warfare based on Qur’anic guidance and Prophetic traditions. Then we look at selected Biblical passages such as 1 Samuel 15:3, Deuteronomy 20:16–17, Numbers 31:17, and Joshua 6:21 to understand how warfare is portrayed in those texts.
The purpose of this discussion is to compare these teachings and encourage thoughtful reflection on the ethical dimensions of war in religious scriptures.
