At the close of 2025, we look back at some of the significant activities and construction milestones that took place on our telescope sites in Australia and South Africa. While infrastructure work continues, the SKA telescopes are beginning to take shape with seven dishes standing tall on the SKA-Mid site and 15,000 antennas assembled on the SKA-Low site on Wajarri Yamaji Country in Australia. In the meantime we also got our sights on the first testing data with the release of the first image from an early working version of SKA-Low and the first fringes from SKA-Mid. The year was packed with progress in the telescope host countries and beyond across the Observatory.
Looking forward to 2026, the SKA Observatory and our collaboration partners SARAO, a national facility of the South African National Research Foundation, and CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, will continue to work hand in hand to deliver the SKA telescopes.
We recognise and acknowledge the Indigenous peoples and cultures that have traditionally lived on the lands on which our facilities are located. In Australia, we acknowledge the Wajarri Yamaji as the Traditional Owners and Native Title Holders of Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, the site where the SKA-Low telescope is being built. Inyarrimanha ilgari bundara means “sharing sky and stars” in the Wajarri language.
