A tale from Kerala folklore has recently garnered significant public attention, recounting the brave act of a lower caste woman who defied the breast tax, known as mulakkaram, by cutting off her breasts and presenting them to a tax collector. This tax was believed to have been imposed to prevent lower caste women from affording upper-body clothing.
Historian Manu Pillai challenges the term "breast tax," asserting that it had no direct connection to breasts and highlighting that covering the breasts was not customary in Kerala's matrilineal society during the woman's lifetime, known as Nangeli.
Note: Manu Pillai makes a reference to Pietro Della Valle with the year 1605, which is actually, 1625
