In 1943, the Allies needed to invade Sicily — but the plan was too obvious. Germany knew it was coming. So British intelligence came up with one of the most bizarre deception operations in military history.
They found the body of a homeless man, dressed him in a British major's uniform, and planted forged documents in his briefcase — documents that pointed to Sardinia and Greece as the real Allied targets. Then they dropped the body off the coast of Spain from a submarine and let the currents do the rest.
Spanish fishermen found the body. The documents reached German intelligence. Hitler dispatched agents to verify the dead man's identity — and found nothing suspicious. He pulled troops and armor off Sicily and sent them to Sardinia and Greece.
On July 9, 1943, the Allies landed on Sicily. Even as the battle raged, Hitler still thought it was a feint. By the time he realized he'd been tricked, it was too late.
One dead homeless man. One briefcase. One of the greatest intelligence operations in WW2 history.
