The Royal Family and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have extended a warm welcome to the German President on his visit to the UK, which is the first by Germany in nearly three decades.
On landing at London Heathrow Airport this morning, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, the former judge Elke Büdenbender, were met by the Prince and Princess of Wales, who accompanied them to Windsor Castle.
This evening, the German couple are being treated to a state banquet hosted by the King and Queen in the grand St George’s Hall, with a towering Christmas tree acting as the backdrop.
