The Dzhanibekov Effect, also known as the Tennis Racket Theorem, is one of the strangest phenomena seen in microgravity. When an object with uneven mass distribution spins in space, it suddenly flips 180 degrees—again and again.
This happens because every object has three axes of rotation: maximum, minimum, and intermediate moment of inertia. Rotation around the intermediate axis is unstable, causing the dramatic flipping motion.
Originally observed by cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov in 1985, this effect is now used to study spacecraft stability, satellite attitude control, and rigid-body physics. Microgravity makes the flip perfectly visible because there’s no air resistance, no friction, and no torque from gravity.
