The idea to establish the National Museum was initiated by Yang Teramat Mulia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. He believed that Malaya (at that time) needed a museum with a national identity to represent the diverse aspects of the country’s culture, heritage, and natural environment. Therefore, the site of the former Selangor Museum building (1906–1945), which was destroyed by an air raid by the Allied Forces on 10 March 1945, was chosen as the location for the construction of the National Museum.

Development work at the National Museum began in 1959 and was fully completed in August 1963. The architectural design of the National Museum was created by the appointed architect, Mr. Ho Kok Hoe, based on the architectural features of the palaces of the Malay rulers. At that time, the National Museum was uniquely the only government building that carried the identity of traditional Malay architecture. The uniqueness of the National Museum is not only seen in its architecture, but also reflected on its front façade, which is adorned with two murals made of Italian mosaic glass. These murals, depicting the historical timeline and handicrafts of Malaysia, were created by Mr. Cheong Laitong, one of Malaysia’s renowned artists.

His Majesty the Third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Putra ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail, officiated the opening ceremony of the National Museum on 31 August 1963. On 11 August 2015, the National Museum received recognition as a national heritage building under the National Heritage Act 2005.
