Continued adoption of wide bandgap power devices is enabling the design of power converters with increased switching frequency and power density. However, parasitic capacitive and inductive couplings between can allow switching noise to couple between areas of the converter and increase electromagnetic interference (EMI). Specifically, the parasitic capacitance between the switching area of the converter and its EMI filter may significantly increase conducted common-mode (CM) EMI noise. This paper proposes a novel technique to incorporate shielding within the PCB inductor of a non-isolated switching converter. This shielding minimizes the parasitic capacitance between the power stage inductor and the EMI filter which results in a 28 dBV reduction in conducted CM noise, throughout the conducted frequency range.
