This unit burned to a crisp and is out of service:
On 4/6/15 about 5:20pm Engine 282 (formerly 482) was dispatched 4th due on the box alarm to the 8700 Blk of Ashwood Dr in Capital Heights Maryland. Units arrived to find over 6 autos and lots of roofing materials on fire outside, but getting close to buildings. Command had Engine 282 taking a flanking position next door to get lines on the fire extending back and close to the buildings.
At at some point propane cylinders started exploding and then roofing tar that was on fire came rolling over like fast moving lava toward two fire engines without time to move or escape. The wagon driver tried to back the wagon out, but the smoke and flames would not let him back up far enough and Engine 282 became engulfed in flames.
This is incident went to three alarms and involved a few small buildings but the main business was saved.
