Historical figures such as André the Giant, a famous wrestler, and Robert Wadlow, the tallest man ever recorded, have also been prominent examples of how the condition manifests.

Medical understanding of gigantism significantly advanced in the 20th century with the discovery of the pituitary gland's role in growth hormone production. Before that, individuals with gigantism were often treated as curiosities or sideshow attractions in circuses, with little understanding of the medical condition underlying their extraordinary growth.

Today, advances in medical treatments, such as surgery to remove pituitary tumors and medications to manage hormone levels, have improved the quality of life for those diagnosed with gigantism. However, without early detection and treatment, the skeletal damage caused by the condition can be lifelong and debilitating.
