An exploration of loneliness and connection on the internet in the indie horror game Last Seen Online. Although the game is has a nice Y2K, aesthetic, its themes and messages are more relevant today than ever.
Last Seen Online is a game about an old computer you found in a garage sale. After turning it on, you explore the life of its previous owner, Liz, and her strange interactions with the game Otherworld. In this video essay I first give an overview of the game, then I analyze the ending and the fate of the game’s tragic character, Liz. Finally I discuss how we all in some ways can relate to Liz, and what we can do about it.
