The song "Limbora, limbora" comes from Slovakia and is an authentic, traditional Slovak folk song. The song has its origins in the Slovak folklore environment, specifically it is often associated with the Podpoľanie region (e.g. the village of Zvolenská Slatina or Detva) in central Slovakia. It is a typical bachelor's song with a love theme, which expresses the feelings and relationships between a young boy and a girl. As with most traditional folk songs, its original author is unknown. It originated and spread through oral tradition over many generations.
The song existed in various regional variants of text and melody for centuries before it was recorded by folklore collectors. It was recorded in various collections of folk songs, for example in the collection of Jaroslav and Vladimír Smutný or Jan Kunc, which indicates its spread in Moravia.
In modern history, it has become very popular thanks to the interpretation by the Czech group Čechomor, which included it on their albums and thus popularized it among the wider public in the Czech Republic. The song is a cornerstone of the repertoire of many Slovak and Czech-Slovak folklore ensembles, such as the Prague ensemble Limbora, which plays it in a stage version. Overall, "Limbora, limbora" is a valued piece of Slovak intangible cultural heritage, which survives and develops thanks to the care of folklore ensembles and modern musicians.
This song was performed at the Souls of Samhainu concert, which took place on November 1, 2025 in the Chapel of the Engagement of the Virgin Mary in Slaný.
