According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary- The word ‘Modifier’ is a noun and ‘Modify’ is its verb form that means -a word or a phrase or a clause that describes another word or phrase to change something slightly.
Actually when a word or a phrase or a clause is used before or after a word or a phrase to modify or describe that is called Modifier.
For Example: The tall lady behind is her husband.
Many students outside started gossiping.

Types of Modifier:
Two types:
1. Pre-Modifier
Example: Rana comes of a poor family but he is a meritorious student.
2. Post-Modifier
Example: The water is not hot enough. So he drinks sparingly.

N.B: Most of the cases Modifier become Adjective or Adverb.
Types Structure Example
Adjective as pre-modifier adjective + word/phrase In a big hall, we listened to the piano by a local artist.
Present Participle as pre-modifier Verb+ing + word/phrase Reading newspaper increases knowledge.
Past participle as pre-modifier V3+ word/phrase We should not drink polluted water.
Noun as pre-modifier Noun + noun/ word/phrase Train journey is favorite to us.
Noun adjective as pre-modifier Adjective + noun + noun Jim bought a nice tea pot.
Determiners as pre-modifier Article ( a,an,the) & Demonstratives(this,that,these,those, so, such, the same)+ word/phrase I bought a novel of Jonathan Swift because this novel is very popular.
Compounds/multiple word as pre-modifier One more words + word/phrase In our college has a group of hard-working students.
Possessive as pre-modifier Possessive(my,his,her,your,our,its, their,possessive noun)+word/phrase Your attitude is praiseworthy.
Quantifiers as pre-modifier Many,much,some,several,few,little,lotof,one,two…+ word/phrase Many foreigners come every year in Cocxesbazar.
Adverb as pre-modifier Adverb+ word/phrase The above poem is interesting.
Intensifier as pre-modifier Very, really, extremely, amazingly, particularly, (enough+ noun) +word/phrase Bangali is a very brave nation.
