Fun facts about the sidewinder rattlesnake with several wild specimens found, photographed and released in Arizona, California and Nevada.
Crossing paths with sidewinders are always cherish-able moments for us. They remind me a lot of wiener dogs in that they're freakishly adorable little runts with big attitudes. Most adults only reach 50-80 centimeters with the females being the larger of the sex. (20 to 32 in)
Sidewinders use a specialized form of locomotion that fuses slithering and walking... It's kind of like two-stepping. Using a coil as a leg it lurches it forward and slides it down the length of the body and repeats.
Sidewinder rattlesnakes are desert adapted species found in the southwestern United states south into Northwestern Mexico.
Because of the large pointed scales above their eyes, they're sometimes referred to as the horned rattlesnake. I'ts believed this adaptation shades the eyes and or prevents sand from drifting over their eyes when they're in buried ambush mode hunting lizards and small rodents. Young use their wiggling tail to lure in lizards.
These guys possess a weaker venom than many other rattlesnakes. That and their smaller size makes them less dangerous than their larger relatives. All rattlesnake bites need immediate medical attention. Stop poking around and get to a doctor.
