This is a video of my cycling along the mighty Indus River (Abasin) which is more than an adventure, it’s a journey through the heart of Pakistan’s history, nature, and human resilience.
In this cinematic travel documentary, I take you from the powerful walls of Tarbela Dam to the ancient town of Hund, crossing landscapes where conquerors once marched, civilizations thrived, and the Indus carved its unforgettable path. This video captures the emotional, historical, and natural depth of one of Pakistan’s oldest and most influential regions.
Our journey begins at Tarbela, home to the world’s largest earthen dam a masterpiece where human engineering meets the unstoppable force of nature. Standing before Tarbela’s massive structure, watching the controlled roar of water, one realizes how skill, courage, and intelligence can work with nature rather than against it. This is the point where the river enters a new identity, as locals call it Abasin, the Father of Rivers.
Just before the Attock Bridge, the Kabul River joins the Indus, creating one of the most powerful confluences in Pakistan. Every drop from this merging carries the weight of history and the energy of new beginnings. From here, the river flows with renewed force, shaping the landscapes, cultures, and lives of millions downstream.
As I cycle toward Bagh Nilab, the roaring power of the Indus begins to soften. The river slows, pauses, and breathes. The surrounding scenery becomes calmer, reminding me how the river holds both fury and peace within the same body.
The roads challenge me with their mountain edges, cold winds, and the occasional loneliness of long-distance cycling but none of these obstacles compare to the motivation the river gives. Every rock my bicycle crossed pushed me closer to a new horizon and a deeper understanding of this mighty waterway.
Moving further, we reach Hund, a place small in size today but monumental in history. Once a vital crossing point of the Indus, Hund witnessed the footsteps of Alexander the Great, Babur, Genghis Khan, Sultan Mahmud Ghazni, and countless travelers who shaped the past of South and Central Asia. Its gardens, greenery, and peaceful settlements once reflected prosperity.
For centuries, this was the bridge between cultures, religions, kingdoms, and empires. After the 16th century, the traditional crossing faded, and the historic route shifted toward what is now the road to Peshawar.
From Tarbela to Kalabagh, and across the plains of Punjab, every point along this journey revealed how deeply the Indus River has influenced human civilization. The river has changed course countless times, touched countless lives, and carried countless stories. Every village, every bend, every settlement adds its own verse to the river’s timeless poem.
Traveling beside the Indus teaches you that life flows in the same way, sometimes loud, sometimes silent, always moving forward, always telling a new story. This is not merely a river; it is the living memory of history, culture, human endurance, and natural power. Each ripple and wave reminds us that humanity has relied on this river for thousands of years, and its story continues even today.
This journey has not only shown me the majesty of nature but also allowed me to witness human courage, patience, and resilience up close. My next chapter along the Indus will begin from the plains of Punjab where the river becomes wider, calmer, and deeply connected to the life of millions.
