In 1897, Zona Shue, young bride of Erasmus "Trout" Shue, was found dead in her home in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. At first, it was thought that she may have died from natural causes, perhaps complications from child birth. Then, strange things were noticed. Trout Shue seemed to pay an unusual amount of attention to Zona's neck and head during her wake. Suspicion mounted.

Even after Zona was buried, authorities and townsfolk alike were perplexed as to just what had happened. Zona's mother, Mary Heaster, suspected Trout Shue of murder from the outset...but could prove nothing. Heaster then claimed that Zona's ghost appeared to her at night and named her own killer.

Trout Shue was arrested and brought to trial in Lewisburg, WV. His trial made headlines around the world. Mary Heaster's extraordinary testimony helped to convict Trout Shut of the grisly crime. Heaster's testimony, unique in the annals of folklore, found its way not only into the newspapers of the day...but into the law books and legal journals as well.

Thus was born the legend of The Greenbrier Ghost.

NOTE: An alert viewer has advised that the photo of Trout Shue currently circulating the internet and used in this feature is NOT a photograph of Shue. It is, in fact, a portrait of Chester Gillette who committed his own act of murder 9 years AFTER the events in this video. A very interesting story in and of itself should you care to research it.
