NOT GUILTY Verdict in the Murder of Melissa Wolfenbarger! Did the Jury Get it Wrong?

In 1998, 21-year-old Melissa Wolfenbarger went missing. Then in April of 1999 her severed her was found in a garbage bag near her husband's workplace. Her other remains, minus her torso were later found in garbage bags also near his workplace. Her remained unidentified, until in an odd twist, her killer father Carl Patton (Flint River Murders - murdered five people) was arrested and DNA ended up identifying Melissa. Although her husband Chris Wolfenbarger, accused of domestic abuse, was the last one to see her alive, he was not arrested. He remained the main suspect for years.

In 2017 Sheryl McCollum, Director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute was contacted by Melissa's mother Norma Patton. Sheryl took an interest in the case and through Nancy Grace, Dateline and her own podcast Zone 7 she claims a tip came in 2023 that broke the case open. The husband, Chris Wolfenberger was arrested and tried in 2024.

On Friday August 22, 2025, the jury took just two hours to come back with a "Not Guilty" verdict, stunning McCallum, Norma Patton, and the courtroom.

Did the jury fail to understand the evidence, did the defense hoodwink them, or were they correct in their conclusion?

I couldn't find the Dateline documentary or any other, but you if you have Investigation Discovery, you can watch "Depths of Depravity" on Season Three, Episode 5. Also, you can go to Sheryl's Zone 7 at Apple Podcasts or whatever podcast you might use and find the shows on the case. There is also trial excerpts on YouTube, especially the closing arguments for the Prosecution and Defense that are very interesting.
