Disclosure is Functional

One of my clients shared their frustration, saying, "I'm not allowed to ask my therapist anything about her. I can't even say 'how are you.'" As a therapist, I find that perspective so strange. It makes me feel like an Uber driver—just there for the ride, no personal connection. I believe in transparency and authenticity. Asking a personal question with the right tone can actually build a lot of good rapport and strengthen the therapeutic alliance.
