In 2016, Snapdeal was India’s rising e-commerce giant.
Valuation: $6.5 billion
Investors: SoftBank, Alibaba
SoftBank Bet: $627M in 2014 — India’s largest single startup cheque at the time
Snapdeal started as a coupon platform, pivoted to e-commerce inspired by Alibaba, and briefly became the country’s largest marketplace by sellers.
But the next 2 years were brutal:
Amazon entered India with deep pockets
Flipkart accelerated growth backed by Tiger Global & Walmart
-- Snapdeal’s funding dried up
By 2017, Snapdeal’s market share fell from ~32% to ~4%. SoftBank suggested a Flipkart merger (~$1B valuation vs $6.5B peak), but the deal was rejected.
Snapdeal’s “value e-commerce” strategy in tier-2 & tier-3 cities couldn’t compete with Meesho’s zero-commission model or Amazon & Flipkart’s logistics power.
Now, Snapdeal is planning an IPO, not for growth, but to provide investor exits.
The biggest lesson: half-hearted pivots fail, businesses must reimagine customer and seller journeys to survive.
Will Snapdeal find a new niche, or will this IPO be just an exit story?
