The Early Worm Gets the Bird was released by Warner Bros under the Merrie Melodies banner in January 13, 1940 and was directed by cartoon mastermind Tex Avery. In it's day this cartoon was not considered politically incorrect at all, in fact it was re-released theatrically for the 1943-44 season and again for the 1952053 season from Warner Bros. My how times change!
The Motion Picture Exhibitor said in a review of this cartoon on January 24, 1940 "The little bird doesn't believe the story (about the big bad wolf), and he wants to find out for himself. He is first caught by the bad fox and then saved by the little worm he was out to get! All of this seems familiar but given a new twist and made better in the Schlesinger vein. Good!" By the Schlesinger vein, he was talking about the irreverent direction of the soon to be famous Tex Avery. Notice no mention at all of what is considered to be the most Un-PD cartoon in Theatrical mainstream animation.
The Motion Picture Herald said on October 10, 1943 on the occasion of its first re-release to theaters "A sidelight on the old adage, this Leon Schlesinger cartoon suggests that a bird can't be too careful." Again no mention at all of what is today considered not PC at all.
It is important to remember the history of the time line, you can not burry history, erase it from our sight and pretend it never existed. Times were different and this cartoon was simply a way to tell a story. Tex Avery took an old tail of the evil fox out to get a smaller creature (the bully after the pray) but at the same time the bird is out to get the worm (bully after pray) in the end the pray saves the pray showing that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Could this cartoon actually be Tex Avery's way of saying race should not be an issue in the military of it get the wolf (Hitler) in the end!
I try to give you as much food for thought here on Cartoon Crazys Channel as possible. Things that are safe for kids, and have no controversy are clearly marked as made for kids! The rest is history, but back as it looked and sounded at the point in time it was created. You are adults and it is up to you to make up your own minds to watch or not.
Please do not ask us to deny history, this is a mainstream theatrical animation, released not once but 3 times by one of the largest studios in the world to open for very big A list motion pictures world wide. Your feelings morals and morass of today do not apply to what happened in 1940, 43 and 53 - but you can chose not to watch if you wish!
I hope you enjoy this chance to see a little piece of history, a frozen moment in time, exactly as it appeared in its long history. Man is best when he learns from the past not when he buries it in the past!
