The Forerunner Ecumene was an advanced civilization which spanned the Milky Way Galaxy 100,000 years before the Halo Franchise. They were experts of astroengineering, building the halo array, the ark, the maethrillian and other megastructures. The Forerunner during ancient times fought the Flood in the Forerunner Flood War, while attempting to uphold the mantle of responsibility. The Forerunner Navy is large, comprised of powerful ships including the Mantle's Approach, and manning defensive positions like the Maginot Line. The Forerunner also used very advanced artificial intelligence.
