A sold-out event at the California Museum in Sacramento brought renewed attention to the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II through rare firsthand accounts. Christine and Stan Umeda, who were children when their families were forcibly incarcerated by the U.S. government, shared stories of years spent in assembly centers and incarceration sites across the country.
They described forced displacement, life behind barbed wire, and the loss of constitutional rights, noting that many of those incarcerated were U.S. citizens who were never charged with any crime. Their son, Greg Umeda, now works at the California Museum educating visitors about this history, often speaking to schoolchildren. The event offered him a chance to share his parents’ experiences with an adult audience and to take action to preserve these stories as survivor voices continue to fade.
