The morning I scratched the ticket, I was in my car, parked behind a faded strip mall on the edge of town. I’d just left the gas station, one of those rundown ones with flickering lights and a sad little claw machine by the door. I wasn’t even supposed to be there—I was just killing time before heading to a roofing job that got pushed back due to forecasted rain. I bought the ticket because I had a crumpled $5 bill and nothing better to do.
I scratched it with my truck key. At first, I thought it was a misprint. Then I thought I’d misunderstood how the ticket worked. But the numbers were clear, and the instructions were right there in bold. I checked it three times in the car, then once again inside the store, making the clerk scan it. He looked up at me and blinked hard, like he didn’t believe it either. Then he gave me a slip and a number to call.
I had won $4.3 million.
