RARE NIXA, MO TOKEN FOUND: My dad Steve Russell and I were able to go treasure hunting today at an 140 year old home in Nixa. I found a really cool old Historic Token about the size of a dime (or back then it was a coupon) that dates from 1909-1920 from Downtown NIXA. It comes from a drug store that Wayne Glenn (The Old Record Collector) said was in operation during this time. Check this out. We have extra detectors for you to use too. Would be fun.
From Wayne Glenn...
Congratulations----another interesting find! The Village Drug Store was founded around 1909 by name. Remember Nixa was very small in those days BUT from 1900 forward there were 2 real doctors in Nixa. Shack Brown had been in this vicinity since 1875 and in 1900 he took in a partner named Wesley Wasson, a great uncle of Jay Wasson. Around 1909 Brown and Wasson employed Don Wilson to operate a "full time" drug store for them. At that point their drug store was the Village Drug Store and likely kept that name until around 1921 when the ownership of the drug store changed. Fent Doran and wife Blanche Wasson Doran bought it and ran it for 32 years. The Village Drug Store was on the west side of south Main street in old downtown Nixa. It likely operated from a small front about 3 doors down from the downtown Nixa Hardware location. It would be safe to date your historic token in the 1909-1920 era!!
The token says “Good for 5c in Trade” and “Village Drug Store-Nixa Mo”
We also found several other old coins including a 1912 and 1942 Wheat penny and a 1963 play dime.
