RECOVI, 55 HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL, ORAL STATEMENT, ITEM 3
Promotion and protection of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development
Har Ghar Jal," or "Water in Every Home”
Mr President!
Today, I stand before the council to commend the remarkable efforts of the Indian Government in its mission to provide safe and accessible drinking water to all rural citizens through the Jal Jeevan Mission. The initiative, aiming to achieve universal household tap connections by 2024, stands as a beacon of hope and progress in the global fight for water equity.
For generations, access to clean water was a privilege in India's rural landscape. Women and children walked miles, often under the scorching sun, just to fetch water. The burden of water scarcity weighed heavily on their health, their education, and their very existence. India though the Jal Jeevan Mission recognized this inequity and rose to the challenge with a vision - "Har Ghar Jal," or "Water in Every Home."
This mission is not merely about building infrastructure. It is about empowering communities, about fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. The Jal Jeevan Mission prioritizes community involvement, placing decision-making power in the hands of local Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees. This participatory approach ensures that solutions are tailored to the specific needs and challenges of each village, fostering a sense of belonging and accountability.
The pace of progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission has been remarkable. Since its launch in 2019, over 136.9 million rural households have been provided with tap water connections. This translates to millions of lives transformed, millions of children who no longer have to miss school due to waterborne illnesses, millions of women who can now dedicate their time to other pursuits, and millions of families who can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing that clean water flows freely within their homes.
However, the journey is far from over, challenges remain in remote and geographically challenging areas. Yet, the commitment and dedication of the Indian government are unwavering. With ongoing efforts, innovative technological solutions, and unwavering community support, India is confident of achieving the ambitious goal of "Har Ghar Jal" by 2024.
Mr. President, Jal Jeevan Mission holds immense potential for replication on a global scale. Its focus on community participation, sustainability, and technology-driven solutions offers a valuable roadmap for other nations grappling with similar water challenges. India is hence committed to sharing its learnings and experiences, to collaborating with international partners, and to supporting the global quest for universal access to safe water.
Thank you Mr President
