Nieuw-Amsterdam - Veenoord is a twin village in the east of Drenthe, municipality of Emmen. The reason that the places never formed one core together should have been the location of the municipal boundary. The valuable part, Veenoord, was in the municipality of Sleen and the eastern part, New Amsterdam, was in the municipality of Emmen. The only difference is that New Amsterdam is 10 years older than Veenoord.

New Amsterdam was founded in 1851, while Veenoord dates back to 1860.
Since the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1998, the places are both in the municipality of Emmen, but the separate place name signs have continued to exist in areas such as Eelde-Paterswolde. These signs can all be found on the west side of Schooldijk and Veilingstraat.
Most of the time Vincent van Gogh spent in Drenthe, in autumn 1883, he lodged with Scholte in Nieuw-Amsterdam. Today, Scholte's lodging house is known as the Van Gogh House (Van Gogh Huis). Recently, the municipality of Emmen planned to demolish the building, but at the last moment this decision was reversed. Today, it houses a restaurant and a museum. The Drawbridge in Nieuw-Amsterdam is probably the most popular work Van Gogh executed during his stay in Nieuw-Amsterdam.
