In this week’s podcast, Mike speaks with Joe Pereira owner of integrity maintenance solutions who is looking for answers on how to handle quality checks and how to pay employees. Both of Joe’s parents were in the cleaning business and started their own company together. Their daughter then took over and merged with Joe’s own cleaning business to specialize in servicing grocery stores and property management companies assisting with turn-key properties across the Northern California Area.
While taking on any kind of cleaning job it is important to pick a specialty or niche. In doing so, you can assure your clients that you are the best in your field and know how to service them properly.
If you overpay your employees to allow time for unexpected circumstances or extra time for cleaning the overpay then becomes expected and not seen as an incentive. Keep your employees happy by offering ten to fifteen percent more to start than other local businesses. Let prospective employees know what the company expects from them and core values of the business. Rather than overpaying offer bonuses, awards, and recognition for those going above and beyond for clients.
While trying to run a business and manage employees can be tedious it is vital to have systems in place. Having schedules as to how often accounts should be checked in on based off frequency of cleaning, and how long it should take to train employees. The training process should take about two weeks all together, with the first 4 days having the new hire with a manager or trainer. After four days, you should feel comfortable as time goes on checking in on the employee less, and less frequently. One way to supercharge training would be to require all employees within a month to be training the newest of employee. Then within three months have employees checking each other’s work, this empowers those working for you to quality check their own work based off judgment of checking and seeing another employees work.
Accounts should be monitored sporadically and feel random to the employees. You don’t want employees to know when a quality check may be performed.
