I'm hunkering down in the basement with apricot-sized hail stones cracking against the roof.
I couldn't get a perfect take of this song. One line or another kept coming out fuzzy, or yawned, and I luckily managed to wrap and turn my recording gear off just a couple seconds before the power dipped from lightning.
But all of that reminds me of this kind of sharing... the unplanned dispatch from the basement, from the thin line between success and failure, and the document of the work-in-progress, alive in the way it tells a story bigger and more nuanced than we bargained for, one about the things we wish were different, and the love that keeps us going anyway.
Riverbed.
It's new, and I have to peek at my hands while I play. But I wanted to share it now, as part of this new song series that doesn't have a name yet. I wanted to talk to you from where I'm at.
It took me what felt like a really, really long time to find equanimity after losing my last relationship. I underwent the kind of death that perhaps caterpillars think they're going through when they start to liquify in their cocoons. It was humbling. And I know I still have farther to fall. Rise, and fall.
So that's where I was at when I wrote this song, emerging raw and shaking from a long winter of shadow. I don't even feel confident in saying that I took myself to task... I did, and I know I'm stronger than I was, but it wasn't from self-improvement, it was from beginning the difficult, simple act of letting everything blocking the way of my soul disappear. The thinning of things to make room for something beyond my own understanding. And yet, intuitive.

Considering I've been walking backwards think I've come a pretty long way
But look where self-righteous got me now
You can be the wind, you can be a porcelain display
You can be a riverbed now, you can be a riverbed now
I buried the bird in the roots of the oak
I buried the rings in the stone of the house
What do you get if it's just sad or just a joke
It can be a riverbed now, it can be a riverbed now
And I see you
Looking like an island in the haze
What can you keep when you just can't stay
You can be a riverbed now, you can be a riverbed now
You can be a riverbed now.
