Mountain Passes: Rhodes & Lady Grey

Описание: Join us on an unforgettable adventure through the breathtaking landscapes of Rhodes and its surrounds in the Eastern Cape Highlands. This tiny, historic village is surrounded by some of the most impressive and beautiful mountain scenery in South Africa, no matter which direction you look, it's pure magic!

We stayed at Swallows Nest Chalet, just 4km outside of Rhodes on the road leading to the legendary Naudé's Nek Mountain Pass. Situated on Grace Hill farm, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, Hilton Dunn. This was the perfect base for exploring the area.

In town, we chatted with locals and had an awesome, memorable conversation with Dave Walker, the legendary owner of Walkerbouts Inn. The town has only one shop (at least what we could find open), but the bartender at Walkerbouts Inn were happy to sell us a much-needed bag of ice.

On route to Rhodes we stopped to visit the Lady Grey Dam, and over our first mountain pass, the scenic Joubert's Pass. It wasn't all smooth sailing though... we had a tyre cut along the way! Thankfully, we managed to plug it and limp back to Lady Grey, where Barabas at OVK saved the day with a proper fix.

This area is famous for the epic Ben 10 Mountain (eco) Passes challenge, but with heavy rain making the roads tricky and my wife being 20 months pregnant, we played it safe and stuck to more manageable (but still stunning) routes. Even so, the beauty here is insane, dramatic mountains, rolling hills, crisp air, and endless views that will take your breath away.
