Based on reports and satellite imagery from early March 2026, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system—specifically its critical AN/TPY-2 radar—was defeated by Iranian missile strikes in the Middle East.
The destruction occurred during a coordinated Iranian, missile, and drone campaign aimed at neutralizing US-allied air defense infrastructure in the region.
Key Aspects of the THAAD Defeat:
Targeting the Radar: Rather than attacking the interceptor launchers, Iranian strikes targeted the AN/TPY-2 radar, often described as the "eyes" of the THAAD system, located at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.
Physical Destruction: Satellite images revealed that the radar shelter was destroyed, showing large impact craters (approx. 13 feet in diameter) and charring, which suggests a successful, high-precision attack.
Overwhelming Defenses: The attack involved a large volume of drones and ballistic missiles designed to overwhelm, rather than merely outpace, the existing air defense networks.
Radar Vulnerability: The AN/TPY-2 radar, which provides long-range tracking, was compromised, causing a significant degradation in the ability to detect incoming threats.
Missile Tactics: The attacking missiles exploited "blind spots" by flying at specific, lower altitudes (30–50 km) that were beneath the optimal detection range of the THAAD radar, wdhile simultaneously utilizing high-speed, unpredictable trajectories that challenged the system's reaction time.
In addition to the damage in Jordan, similar strikes were reported against radar infrastructure in the UAE and Qatar, contributing to a "systemic collapse" of the regional, US-led missile defense grid during the early days of the conflict
