🎖️This documentary examines Operation Iceberg, the Allied invasion of Okinawa that began on April 1, 1945. It traces the massive naval buildup and preliminary bombardment, the unexpectedly light resistance on L-Day, and the Japanese strategy under Lt. Gen. Mitsuru Ushijima to trade space for time and bleed the invaders along the Shuri defensive system. The film explores the sustained kamikaze campaign—including mass Kikusui attacks and the “Baka” piloted bomb—that inflicted historic losses on the U.S. Fleet, as well as the attritional ground battles for Dakeshi Ridge, Wana Draw, and Sugar Loaf Hill. It covers the Oroku Peninsula fighting, the sinking of Yamato, General Simon Buckner’s death, and the final collapse of the 32nd Army. The documentary concludes with the human cost: thousands of American and Japanese military dead and an enormous civilian toll on Okinawa, and how the battle’s outcome shaped the endgame of the Pacific War.
