Erlebe eine der schönsten Wanderungen in Bayern: Von Kehlheim zur Befreiungshalle, weiter zum Kloster Weltenburg (https://www.kloster-weltenburg.de) mit Zillenfahrt über die Donau, durch die Weltenburger Enge zum beeindruckenden Donaudurchbruch – und zurück auf dem malerischen Uferweg.
Unsere 15 km lange Rundwanderung startet am Parkplatz an der Donau in Kehlheim. Zunächst geht es hinauf zur historischen Befreiungshalle mit herrlichem Blick über das Donautal. Auf dem oberen Höhenweg wandern wir Richtung Kloster Weltenburg, wo wir mit einer traditionellen Zille ans andere Ufer übersetzen. Nach einer kurzen Rast in der Schenke - wo es tolles Bier und leckeres Essen gibt - setzen wir mit der Seilfähre wieder über, steigen noch einmal an und genießen den Blick auf die Felsformationen, bevor wir zur Weltenburger Enge und dem spektakulären Donaudurchbruch absteigen. Die Weltenburger Enge ist Bayerns erstes Nationales Naturmonument.
Die Weltenburger Enge gehört zu den „100 schönsten Geotopen Bayerns“. Sie entstand aus Kalkriffen, die sich vor 150 Millionen Jahren in einem subtropischen Meer bildeten. Vor etwa 200.000 Jahren schnitt sich ein Nebenarm der Urdonau in das Gestein und formte das heutige Flussbett. Auf rund fünf Kilometern fließt die Donau hier zwischen bis zu 70 Meter hohen Kalkfelswänden – ein beeindruckendes Naturerlebnis, das sich besonders gut vom Schiff oder Boot aus beobachten lässt.
Der Rückweg führt direkt am Donauufer entlang zurück nach Kehlheim – ein perfektes Zusammenspiel aus Natur, Kultur und Flusspanorama.

Experience one of the most beautiful hikes in Bavaria: from Kehlheim to the Hall of Liberation, on to Weltenburg Abbey (https://www.kloster-weltenburg.de) with a boat trip across the Danube, through the Weltenburg Gorge to the impressive Danube Gorge – and back along the picturesque riverside path.
Our 15 km circular hike starts at the car park on the Danube in Kehlheim. First, we climb up to the historic Hall of Liberation with its magnificent view over the Danube valley. On the upper mountain trail, we hike towards Weltenburg Abbey, where we cross to the other side in a traditional barge. After a short break in the tavern – where there is great beer and delicious food – we cross back over with the rope ferry, climb again and enjoy the view of the rock formations before descending to the Weltenburg Gorge and the spectacular Danube Gorge. The Weltenburg Gorge is Bavaria's first national natural monument.
The Weltenburg Gorge is one of the ‘100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria’. It was formed from limestone reefs that developed in a subtropical sea 150 million years ago. Around 200,000 years ago, a tributary of the Urdonau cut into the rock and formed the current riverbed. Here, the Danube flows for around five kilometres between limestone cliffs up to 70 metres high – an impressive natural spectacle that is particularly good to observe from a ship or boat.
The return route leads directly along the banks of the Danube back to Kehlheim – a perfect combination of nature, culture and river panoramas.
