The name “Leichtbau” means “lightweight construction” in German, reflecting the core concept of its creator, Friedrich Eugen Maier, a German engineer based in Berlin. He aimed to develop a lightweight, affordable car suitable for the general public. During that period, Germany was promoting the idea of the “Volkswagen,” or “people’s car,” emphasizing affordable vehicles accessible to ordinary citizens. Maier therefore set out to create a prototype that aligned with this vision.

Although he was not part of a major automotive company, his car featured impressive engineering details compared to other vehicles of the same era. It had a monocoque body structure in a two-door sedan design, accommodating four passengers. The car also incorporated several innovative features, such as headlights that turned in the direction of the steering wheel to improve visibility while cornering, an adjustable-height suspension system, and a driver’s seat with multiple adjustment positions—an invention that was patented. Many of these ideas later became standard features in automobiles decades afterward, demonstrating Maier’s forward-thinking vision.

In terms of performance, the Leichtbau Maier was initially powered by a 692 cc DKW engine producing approximately 20 horsepower. It was later upgraded to a 1,200 cc Volkswagen engine, delivering around 30 horsepower.

Although the project received financial support in its early development stages, political issues and conflicts with the government at the time prevented it from progressing to mass production. The prototype was later damaged during events related to World War II, but it was eventually restored and repaired to running condition once again. Today, the car stands as a historical artifact, reflecting the determination and creativity of an independent pre-war engineer.
