The Vatheia village was originally founded in the 1700’s, and reached its peak in the 1800’s. By the time, the early 1900’s came about, the village was declining and people left and dispersed to some of the larger towns and cities in the area.
The buildings are considered to be unique examples of Greek folk architecture and is a example of typical Maniot architecture.
In the 1980’s the Greek government spearheaded a restoration project. The Greek Tourist Board restored its towers and tower houses, making them into small hotels and guest accommodation. Ten years later the towers passed to the heirs of their original owners, only to be abandoned again as history repeated itself.
Mani and the Maniots played a key role in the Greek War of Independence that began in 1821. and Mani was the only region of Greece that the Ottomans had not occupied due to the rough terrain and the rebellious spirit of the Maniots.
