This month's #therapyThursday, presented by The SONA Foundation in partnership with Backline, explores the personal experiences, insights, challenges, and rewards of caregiving, specifically for loved ones with dementia.

Drawing from their work as songwriters and caregivers, our guests this month are Joshua Hill and Melissa Axel.

ABOUT MELISSA AXEL
Melissa Axel is a story-driven lyricist, songwriter, and creative producer for the stage and screen. After working on concerts at the Hollywood Bowl for Disney and more, Axel wrote lyrics for and helped develop a series of mini-musicals about L.A. artists, a Golden Globes Foundation grant awards special, and an Emmy-nominated benefit for MusiCares (The Recording Academy / GRAMMY®s charity affiliate). Other projects include songs for award-winning short films, an animated pilot, and A Celebration of Disney Parks Music starring Noah Sunday-Lefkowitz. With a keen ear for sonic quality and an empathetic approach to collaboration, Axel’s work reflects a deep love for bringing emotion to life through musical storytelling.

JOSHUA HILL
Los Angeles-based Joshua Hill is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and multi-media artist whose award-winning work includes a series of performances highlighting firsthand the benefits of music for people with dementia in order to bring therapeutic music services to individuals with dementia and their families, and spread awareness of these benefits through media and art.


We’re also joined by Backline Clinical Counselor Ari Jacobson, who offers expert advice on navigating the caregiving; as well as Terra Lopez, Backline Community Manager, songwriter, and podcaster, who guides the conversation and encourages open dialogue around this common experience.
