The Mercedes-Benz W124 had only been on the market for two years when the question of a V8 engine became relevant in 1987. BMW's new 7 Series (E32) and the new Japanese luxury car, the Lexus LS400, began to challenge Mercedes' dominance in the luxury car segment. Mercedes lacked the capacity to convert the W124 model into a performance car with a V8. Porsche had spare capacity.
A development contract was signed in 1988 with Porsche AG. After 32 prototypes, the 500 E was ready for production in 1990 and it was a very complex process to hand-build the car. During this time, the car was sent between companies as many as four times. All this took 18 days. This made the car extremely expensive.
During its production period (1991–1995), the 500 E underwent several improvements. Starting with the 1994 model year, the 500 E changed its name to the E 500. A total of 10,479 cars were built and they are very sought after and highly valued.
