STORYLINE:
Israel continued its airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Friday, hitting targets in the port city of Tyre, hours after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution seeking a "full cessation" of violence between Israel and Hezbollah.
Smoke could be seen rising from explosions on hills in an area east of Tyre. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Meanwhile, French naval vessels could be seen off the coast of Lebanon carrying supplies and letters for the French contingent of the UNIFIL force based in Nakoura.
The resolution, adopted unanimously, authorises 15,000 UN peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israeli forces that have occupied the area withdraw.
A UNIFIL warrant officer said he was not sure what changes his contingent would have to undertake in the coming days and weeks, as the finer details of the resolution were being resolved.
"All we know is we are going to stay here and eventually be enforced by other people but we don't know more than that," said Lionel Martin, warrant officer and defence platoon leader for UNIFIL.
Some people interviewed in Tyre said they were hopeful the resolution would bring an end to the violence in southern Lebanon "so that all citizens can come back to their homes peacefully and safely," one resident said.
The next point of contention will be when to implement the cessation of hostilities.
Israel said its campaign would continue until Sunday, when its Cabinet will meet to endorse the resolution.
Meanwhile, long columns of Israeli tanks, troops and armoured personnel carriers streamed over the border early on Saturday, as Israel pressed ahead with its military offensive in south Lebanon, hoping to inflict heavy damage on Hezbollah before a proposed cease-fire deal comes into effect.
