Hostal San Marcos is a 16th Century Monastery-Hospital which was once an ancient convent that was used as a hospital in order to lodge the pilgrims who were on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It is a monumental building which features a Spanish Plateresque facade with an appearance of the Cloister and the Chapterhouse.
This historical building has been renovated and adapted for use as one of Spain's most luxurious paradors.
The Parador is located in the Plaza de San Marcos, next to the bridge of the same name over the River Bernesga.
There are suites called cells located in the original building and in the towers which overlook the river and/or the square, but most of the hotel rooms are modern rooms in a new building which is located behind the old one.
The church and cloister can be visited separately.
This accommodation contains all the facilities and conveniences you would expect from a hotel in its class.
León, now a modern city, owes its name to a Roman army camp which goes back to 68 AD. The camp used to protect silver and gold mines in the neighbourhood.
Casa de Botines is an early work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, nowadays occupied by a bank.
Leóns other golden glory is its gothic cathedral. Construction started in the mid-thirteenth century, activities progressed slowly and it was only completed in the sixteenth century.
